Growing up I would stumble upon various African masks. I would see them at different art exhibits and also at some of my family members houses and would usually be made uneasy by them. As a kid they would scare me since I did not understand what they were and what they symbolized. I was just stuck on the fact that they were large and not natural looking. Though when I started to understand that they are actually used for ceremonies, celebrations and as art it became a lot more interesting since I could understand what they symbolized.
